Media Project

This assignment made me think out of the box in ways I never had before. The object assigned to me was a margarine tub, and for a long time I was convinced I would not figure out a good use of the tub for my client. Learning how to be creative and prioritizing my client's interests and needs first was the biggest thing that I took away from this assignment. We have learned all throughout school so far how important it is to get to know the person's needs and desires in order to give them the care they deserve, and I loved being able to implement it. I originally had ideas of how to use the tub to work on fine motor skills, but I quickly realized my original idea and state-of-mind was not client centered. This is why I decided to transform my original idea into a history game, as my client used to be a history professor. It is easy to modify the content of the game to better engage my client's needs and interests, such as figuring out what kind of history she enjoys and what kinds of questions she would like answering. Not only does this game work on fine motor skills and cataracts management, but it also involves history which is something that my client is passionate about! I feel like I have grown as an aspiring OT. Before doing this assignment, I had doubts and was nervous about turning an everyday object into a client centered intervention. In the beginning, I thought that I would not be able to come up with something targeting my client's interests. Once I got the ball rolling, I discovered that it was much easier to think of ideas than I had previously thought. I have changed and grown throughout this project because I now better understand how to turn an everyday object into a cheap intervention that can greatly benefit someone. This will come in handy in practice, as I will be doing this often. This assignment will impact me in the future by making me think from different perspectives and looking at things from different angles. I now feel more confident in brainstorming interventions for a client's specific needs, and I will carry this with me throughout the rest of OT school as well as into my clinical work. This project was a ton of fun to complete and I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn how to be the most client centered OT I can be!
