I watched a TEDTalk by Kim Gorgens on how to protect one's brain against concussions. Previously, I did not realize how serious concussions can be. It makes sense, as I have learned in class that they are a traumatic brain injury. I have had many friends with concussions, and I never realized how much of an effect they take on people and how common they are. During this TEDTalk, Gorgens discussed how common it is for children to get concussions, and the numbers baffled me. Kids play rough and have quite a few injuries as they grow and learn how to navigate the world, so it makes sense that they would be more prone to injuries. Those that play sports, especially football, commonly undergo concussions. Gorgens talked about how while people cannot completely prevent their kids from getting concussions (unless you wrap them in bubble wrap), there are certain things that can be done to try to prevent them as much as possible. Making sure kids have the proper safety equipment is one of the most important things that can be done. Gorgens mentioned that wearing a helmet decreases the g-force of impact by half, which is something I was not previously aware of. This is one of the easiest things people can do to prevent head injuries, yet a lot of people do not do this. I think if more people were aware of how much a helmet can reduce the force of impact, more people would wear them.
This video brought me a lot of insight into how common concussions are among kids. I was astounded to hear about the profound affects multiple concussions can have on one's memory and cognition when she started talking about how pro-athletes' wives noticed cognitive changes in their husbands in their forties. Concussions are something that people do not think of as very serious, so it is great that Gorgens is trying to get the word out there about the steps that can be taken to prevent kids from getting concussions. I will be more conscious now of wearing a helmet and taking the proper safety precautions when I am at a higher risk for head injury. This is information that I will carry with me throughout life and that I will use on a day to day basis.
